Lower Face Wrinkles & Fine Lines

Lower face wrinkles and sagging, which often manifest around the mouth and chin, are significantly influenced by the action of depressor muscles in the face. These muscles pull the facial features downward, contributing to expressions such as frowning or pouting. Over time, the persistent use of these muscles engraves lines into the skin, similar to how repeated expressions affect the upper face.

As we age, the skin’s reduced ability to bounce back—due to diminished collagen and elastin—means these lines become more pronounced and permanent.

Moreover, the aging process naturally leads to a loss of fat and volume in the lower face, worsening the sagging and appearance of deep folds. The continuous pull of the depressor muscles can create a more pronounced downturn of the mouth and the development of marionette lines (the lines running from the corners of the mouth down to the chin).

This sagging and wrinkling effect is further influenced by genetics and environmental elements like sun exposure, which accelerate the breakdown of skin-supporting proteins. B

DAO TREATMENT

DAO treatment targets the downward turn of the corners of the mouth. Some people have quite a strong pull in this area, which pulls the smile down, creating a ‘sad clown’ smile. This muscle can also create the appearance of heavier jowls by pulling the skin of this area downward.

LIP FLIP

A ‘Lip Flip’ treatment targets the orbicularis oris muscle. As we age, this muscle tends to curl the lip inward, creating a flatter smile. We can correct this by treating the underlying muscle. This in turn allows the muscle to gently roll the lip outward, creating the illusion of a more pouty lip.

GUMMY SMILE

A ‘Gummy Smile’ occurs when an individual shows too much gum above their teeth when smiling. This can be a source of embarrassment for many people and is the result from the over-elevation of the upper lip muscle.

LIPSTICK LINES

Lipstick lines or Peri-Oral Lines occur when we activate the orbicularis oral muscle. We can activate this muscle by pursing of our lips our pouting. These lines become more prominent as we age. This can be due to intrinsic factors like the lengthening of the philtrum (area between the nose and upper lip). They can also be due to extrinsic factors such as sun damage or smoking.

NECK LIFT

A Neck Lift targets the platysma muscle, which sits on either side of our neck. As we age, our platysma muscle shortens and pulls down on our jawline. This gravitational pull creates the appearance of the infamous ‘Turkey Neck, ’ giving us a jowly appearance. This can make a person appear much older than they really are. We lose the contour of our jawline, making our platysma bands look more prominent.
