Stop the Sweat! Your Guide to Treating Hyperhidrosis
Excessive sweating, medically known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition that affects approximately 1 in 20 Australians. While sweating is a normal bodily function that helps regulate temperature, individuals with hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweat production that exceeds what is needed for thermal regulation. This can significantly impact daily life, causing discomfort, affecting social interactions, and leading to clothing choices that prioritise sweat management over personal style. This can also affect confidence and overall comfort.
The Two Types of Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis typically presents in two forms – primary, which we treat at Aesthetic Allure, and secondary, which is caused by underlying health conditions and may require further medical investigation.
Primary hyperhidrosis typically affects specific areas, including the underarms, palms, soles of the feet, and face. This form begins typically during adolescence or early adulthood and occurs without an identifiable medical cause. It is believed to result from overactivity in the sympathetic nervous system, particularly in response to stress, heat, or emotion. Sweating episodes are often symmetrical (affecting both sides equally) and may be worsened by anxiety or certain triggers.
Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying medical condition or as a side effect of medications. Unlike primary hyperhidrosis, this form may affect larger or generalised areas of the body and can occur during sleep. Common causes include thyroid disorders, menopause, diabetes, infections, and the use of certain medications such as antidepressants or antipyretics. Addressing the underlying issue is crucial in managing secondary hyperhidrosis.
Treatment Options for Hyperhidrosis
Managing hyperhidrosis effectively requires a tailored approach based on the severity of the condition and the area affected. At Aesthetic Allure in Aspley, we recognise that each individual’s experience with hyperhidrosis is unique, and we provide customised non-surgical treatment options tailored to your specific needs and goals. Our treatments are in line with current AHPRA and TGA advertising guidelines, ensuring you receive the highest standard of care.
Topical Treatments
Over-the-counter and prescription-strength antiperspirants containing aluminium chloride are often the first step—these work by temporarily blocking sweat glands. While effective for mild cases, they may not provide relief for those with moderate to severe symptoms.
Aesthetic Allure Prescribed Nerve-Blocking Injections
This treatment involves small injections of a prescription-only medicine that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals responsible for activating sweat glands. Administered by Nurse Cassie or Doctor Alex, this treatment is most commonly used to manage underarm hyperhidrosis. It can provide a significant reduction in sweating for 3 to 6 months at a time.
As this treatment uses a Schedule 4 medication, it must be prescribed by a doctor following an individualised medical consultation and assessment. At Aesthetic Allure, this is always performed in compliance with QLD Health and AHPRA standards.

Oral Medication
In some cases, your doctor may prescribe anticholinergic medications to reduce overall sweating. However, these may come with systemic side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, or urinary retention and are typically considered when other methods are ineffective.
Lifestyle Adjustments
Wearing breathable fabrics, avoiding known sweat triggers (e.g., caffeine, spicy foods), and practising stress-reducing techniques can help in managing symptoms, especially in conjunction with medical treatment.
