Lip & Peri-Oral Contouring

The lips are a defining feature of the face and play an important role in overall balance, proportion, and expression. Their appearance is shaped by several factors, including the vermillion border, symmetry, volume, and the relationship between the upper and lower lips.

With age, a number of structural changes take place that can alter the appearance of the lips. The vermillion border, which provides definition, often becomes less distinct. Collagen and elastin production within the skin naturally declines, reducing firmness and elasticity. The lips themselves may lose volume, creating a flatter or thinner profile. Fine lines, sometimes called perioral lines, can develop around the mouth as a result of repetitive movements and changes in skin quality.

Other anatomical factors also play a role. The philtrum — the vertical space between the nose and upper lip — tends to lengthen over time, which contributes to the perception of a flatter upper lip. Bone resorption in the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) can change the underlying support of the mouth, while shifting fat pads and reduced soft tissue further affect lip shape and projection.

When considering aesthetics, proportions are sometimes referenced to understand balance. The Golden Ratio of Beauty (Phi) is one such principle, suggesting that lips may appear harmonious when the lower lip is slightly fuller than the upper, often around a 1:1.6 proportion. However, proportions and preferences vary significantly between individuals, and ideals of balance and beauty shift over time.

Booking your Consultation

All clients must attend a one-on-one consultation before commencing any treatment that may involve a prescriptive medication. Each consultation is scheduled for a minimum of 45 minutes to allow sufficient time for a thorough discussion and assessment.

During your consultation, our team will take the time to understand your goals, review your facial anatomy, and discuss how natural ageing changes may be affecting the lips and surrounding areas. This process helps us outline which options may be suitable for you and provide clear information so you can make informed decisions about your care.

At your appointment, you will also receive tailored aftercare guidance, with a copy emailed to you so you can refer back to it whenever needed.

We encourage you to bring any questions along — your consultation is the perfect time to explore your concerns and discuss what’s most important to you.
